ABOUT US - Become a Mentor

The Illinois Small Business Development Center at
the Starved Rock Country Alliance

If you have business knowledge and experience, you might consider becoming a mentor with the Alliance SBDC.

As a mentor, you need to:

  • hold a strong ethical and professional background with expertise in one or more areas of business

  • have strong communication and listening skills, as well as the emotional intelligence, to act as a role model, advisor, critic and consultant

  • be able to dedicate time to meet with your mentee

  • allow the mentee to drive the relationship, initiate meetings and set the agenda

  • help the mentee to develop important organizational skills

  • support and challenge your mentee, giving them fair, considered feedback on their performance

  • help develop your mentee's problem-solving skills and improve their self-confidence by allowing them to make their own decisions.
